On my way to work today, I stopped by the newly opened Tango Mango to get a burrito. I was planning on getting steak, but the promise of spicy pork led me astray.
I got a medium (there was no no small) Chile Verde (spicy pork) burrito with cheese, guacamole, & sour cream ($6.30). Just watching how little pork went in to the tortilla made me cringe.
The pork wasn’t spicy (based on my standards), but it was quite tasty. The rice was made with a bit too much water.
Verdict: All in all, it wasn’t a bad burrito, but I’d rather head the few blocks to Taqueria el Amigo or Taqueria Mexico. It was definitely overpriced for what I got.
P.S. I forgot that I’m pissed that they charged me for a large burrito ($7.30), and I didn’t realize it until hours later.

PK and I had a long drive ahead of us a few weekends ago, and we were not in the mood for the crap food at the rest stops off 90 so when I left work, I headed to Taqueria el Amigo. I got a few tortas since they are just as delicious when they are at room temperature as when hot. I was indecisive so I got a pollo, carne asada, and al pastor ($4/each). Damn, they were all great. Our favorite was the carne asada.
Verdict: Taqueria el Amigo never disappoints.

After reading and hearing about Angela’s Cafe for months, PK and I finally headed out to East Boston. It was early on a Saturday afternoon, and the small restaurant already had a good sized crowd.
I really wanted to try so much more than we ordered, but there was only two of us, so we had to restrain ourselves. We got the Sopa Azteca (Tortilla Soup; $3.95), Tinga Tostada (shredded beef; $3.50), Taco Arobe (Pork; $2.75), and the Chicken Mole Plate ($12.45).
All I can say is that this place lived up to its hype. All the food was outstanding. The Chicken Mole was by far the best dish that we ordered. I have never had a mole with so much flavor.
Next time I go back, I am going to try one of their Pipians if it is on their specials menu.
When you go to Angela’s make sure that you check out their specials board and that you also ask person who is waiting on you to let you know about their unlisted specials.
Verdict: So delicious!

A few days ago, I had to run a some errands during my lunch break. I decided to take a few side streets to get there, rather than take the main roads, hoping to find a new restaurant. When I was a block from one of my destinations, I passed by Taqueria El Amigo.

It is a small sit down place that was pretty crowded. I ordered four tacos to go, two carne asada and two el pastor ($5.51). In the bag, they included a salsa that had a nice spice and two wedges of lime. The tacos were really good. I liked the carne asada a bit more than the pastor.
Verdict: Very good tacos at a great price.

A few people from work decided to make the walk across the park to bring back some food from El Pelón for the rest of us. I usually get the Caramelos Tacos ($5.75) or the Pescado Tacos ($5.75), but, this time, I decided to try something different (based on the recommendation of a co-worker) and ordered the Carne Asada Torta ($4.85) and Rajas Tamal ($2.25). The Torta was a really big sandwich filled with marinated steak and topped with many things, including a tasty spicy mayo (I am normally a mayo hater) and guacamole. While I like the Pescado and Caramelos Taco more, I will order the torta when I am hungrier than usual since you get a lot more food for the money. I did not care much for the Tamal since it was too much tamal with too little filling, making it too dry and bland for my liking. I didn’t order any chips since I assumed that someone else in the office would, but, unfortunately, no one did, which was disappointing since El Pelón makes some of the best tortilla chips that I have had since moving to Boston (although I don’t care much for their salsa; therefore, I recommend ordering a side of guacamole when ordering chips).
Verdict: El Pelon has yet to disappoint me. Often I feel that it is overlooked by many Boston residents who flock to other burrito places. While I do like El Pelón’s burritos, I find that their specialty tacos are what makes them stand out from the competition.

The other day, PK and I went to Somerville to pick up an old record cabinet that we found on craigslist. Since we rarely make it to that area, I suggested that we try Tu y Yo. This restaurant has been on the top of my To Try list for about a year. We started with a Chelada (beer with salt and lime juice; $5.50) and a Michelada (beer with salt, pepper, lime juice, and Tabasco; $5.50). PK seemed a bit upset that my glass had a few more ounces than hers. Even though I am not a fan of Tabasco (I prefer Goya’s hot sauce), my beer was great with a spicy kick. Next, we split a Sope ($3.75) which was a corn flour dough base topped with beans, grated cheese, and steak (you can choose other options). It was good, but the flavors did not stand out. For a main course, I had the Camarón con Pulpo (shrimp and octopus in a garlic mojillo sauce with pasilla peppers; $17.95). This dish was very good, both the octopus and the large shrimp were cooked to perfection, and the pasilla peppers added a lot of flavor. PK had the Pipían Verde en Colimense (Pork loin with onions, garlic, pumpkin seeds, and guajillo sauce; $13.95). Her dish was good, but was not very flavorful. Both dishes came with the most delicious rice that I have ever had at a Mexican restaurant.
Verdict: Although we both really enjoyed Tu y Yo, we feel that the meal was a bit too expensive for what we got. Also, we both found it a bit ridiculous that there was an extra charge for tortillas (not chips) if you wanted some with your meal.

PK and I were trying to go to an antique shop near the CambridgeSide Galleria, but like every time I attempt to drive to that area, I get lost. As soon as I admitted defeat, PK took over and we ended up somewhere in Somerville. At this point, I was getting hungry. We saw the sign for Tapatio and decided to try it. We ordered a steak taco ($1.50), a pork taco ($1.50), a Queso con Loroco pupusa ($1.50), a Revueltas pupusa ($1.50), and a horchata ($1.25). The pupusas were good, but not as good as La Pupusa & Guanaca. However, the tacos were excellent and the horchata was very good.
Verdict: Tapatio’s pork taco is probably the best taco that I have had since I moved to Boston. We need to go back since their burritos and soups looked amazing.
