Fiore’s Bakery – Breakfast Sandwich

November 8th, 2008

Fiore's Breakfast Sandwich

I have to work one Saturday a month.  While I am not a fan of working on a weekend, and am quite cranky when I do wake up, the one thing that I do look forward to is Fiore’s.

While I am a huge fan of bacon, egg, & cheese sandwiches on an english muffin, they are no longer my favorite when it comes to a breakfast sandwich.  Over the last few months, I’ve become addicted to the Crossaint Turkey & Swiss sandwich at Fiore’s. While the sandwich is pretty small, and sort of expensive for what it is (around $3.00), my working Saturdays would just not be complete without one.

Hot Breads

I was in Woburn, and I was hungry. I decided to just pull in to the first parking spot that I could find and get something cheap to eat. I ended up pulling up right in front of Hot Breads. Based on the atmosphere and the food, I would have never guessed that this place is a chain.

There were way too many choices. While most of the people in the bakery were eating dosas, I was drawn to the buns, puffs, and croissants that were stuffed with lamb, spicy chicken, and paneer. Of course, I bought too many.

I think that I was expecting a lot more flavor out of these. While I liked them, I was also a bit disappointed.

Verdict: Good enough to back to if I find myself near Woburn.

Turkuaz Market

baklava - turkuaz market - eat and destroy

PK and I are back from LA.  I will post some pictures from a few of the restaurants, and, hopefully, a video of PK and my dad eating live shrimp at The Hump in Santa Monica. The video came out really dark due to the lighting so I am going to try and mess with the contrast so you can see them biting the shrimps while they are still moving around.

A few days before we left for LA, we were shopping at Super 88 in Brighton and decided to check out Turkuaz Market, which is located just across the street.  Besides carrying Turkish Kinder Eggs, they make what is probably the best baklava I have ever had. As soon as we left the market, I ate the baklava and was in the process of turning around to get more until I realized that between us we did not have $1 for another piece.

Verdict: Even if you are stuffed from your meal at the Super 88 food court, you will find enough room for a piece of baklava from Turkuaz.

Fiore’s Bakery

Fiore's - Eat and Destory Fiore's - Eat and Destroy

PK and I have only visited a few of the bakeries that have opened in Jamaica Plain over the past few years. In the past month, we have been to Fiore’s Italian Bakery twice. During our first visit, we ordered a large hazelnut coffee ($1.50), one Raspberry Scone ($1.75), and one Blueberry Scone ($1.75).  On our second visit, we had another large coffee, a Frozen Dough ($2.00), and a Nut Stick ($1.75). Their scones are amazing and their choice in coffee (Jim’s Organic) makes it the best basic cup in the area. The Nut Stick was also delicious, but the Frozen Dough lagged a bit behind.

Verdict: Hands down, Fiore’s has the best scone. Most other scones are either too dry or too muffin like, but Fiore’s found the perfect balance.

Le Foyer Bakery

Le Foyer Bakery

On Sunday, PK was at work, and I was busy working on my new (to me) phonograph from the 1920s. After making little progress, I decided that I wanted a Haitian chicken patty. I headed to Le Foyer Bakery in Mattapan. Unfortunately, I got there late in the day, and they were out of chicken patties. The only reason why I was able to hold back my tears was because they still had some beef patties left. I ordered three beef and two salted fish patties. Both of these were really good, but, in my opinion, not as good as their chicken patties.  Of the two I liked the beef patty the best. When PK got home and tried them, she agreed.
Verdict: Le Foyer Bakery has the best chicken patties that I have ever had. Their beef and fish patties are good, but unlike the chicken patties, I do not dream about them.

Sevan’s Bakery

Sevan's Bakery - Watertown - Eat and Destroy - A Boston Area Food Blog Sevan's Bakery - Taramosalata - Eat and Destroy - A Boston Area Food Blog

On Saturday, PK was in Watertown so she stopped by Sevan’s Bakery to bring home some treats. She picked up some of their homemade Taramosalata ($5.99/pound) and a circular bread that had eggplant, cheese, mushrooms, onions, tomato, and olive oil on top of it ($4.00). I had no idea what the real name of this was so I decided to check in with Silva, an Armenian friend who I work with, and she said that it definitely is not Armenian. Ten minutes later she came to my office to let me know that she had called Sevan’s and they told her that it was just something that they came up with and it has no name. Also, I would like to point out that Silva just got upset with me since I did not have Sevan’s Lahmahjoon, which she claims is amazing. I blamed PK so I am off the hook. Anyway, Sevan’s has the second to best taramosalata that I have ever had. (The best is at Greek Islands in Chicago.) If you buy the taramosalata at Sevan’s, make sure to get the one that they make there, and not the one that comes in a jar since it is not as good.

Verdict: Sevan’s is one of my favorite bakeries in the Boston area. It is almost impossible to walk out of there with just a few things. That is why I now go there with only $10 in my pocket. Next time I go, I will take Silva’s advice and have their Lahmahjoon.
