Shio in NH

January 8th, 2010

After visiting PK’s family in NH for the holidays, I wanted to check out some thrift stores (hoping to add more crap to my collections of way too many things). When we were at one thrift, we realized we needed some food (and drinks). We saw the sign for Shio, and decided to give it a shot. Being an urban food snob, my expectations were low.

I was wrong…

We  ordered 2 Mai Tais, chirashi, and one of their fancy rolls. The Mai Tais was pretty good. They weren’t close to as good as the old Spring Blossom quality, but they were pretty much on par with  Green Tea (which is well above average for Boston restaurants).

The sashimi was really fresh and delicious. The cuts were a good size and the price was right. (I think the chirashi was $12 during lunch and it came with 12 pieces.)

So, if you are anywhere near Portsmouth, and are craving sushi, you should definitely check it out.

Puritan Backroom

December 10th, 2008

PK & I were visiting her family in Manchester, NH the other weekend. When we finally motivated to head out for lunch, we were already too late for the delicious poutine at Chez Vachon. We ended up at the Puritan Backroom which is known for two things, their fried chicken tenders and their mudslides.

We ordered Potato Skins w/bacon ($6.75), Fried Chicken Tenders Dinner ($10.99), and a mudslide each.

mudslide @ The Puritan Backroom

The Puritan makes the best mudslide that I have ever had. (And, yes, I am embarrassed that I have ordered a few of these over the years.) They have many varieties of mudslides, but both PK & I stuck with the classic.

The Potato Skins were also great.  Unlike most places, there was not too much potato, so we got what we wanted, some very crispy potato skins stuffed with cheese and bacon.

chowder @ the Puritan

Since a soup came with our meal, we decided to go for the Clam Chowder.  Neither of us are really  fans of clam chowder since it is usually too watery at most restaurants, but this one was nice and creamy.

Now, on to the chicken tenders… All I can say is that if more places made chicken tenders like the Puritan Backroom, I might actually order them at other restaurants. The fry was great, they use quality white meat, and they are marinated in something tasty (I’m guessing pineapple juice). Also, you get a lot of chicken for your money.

Verdict: If you are in the area or you are just craving mudslides and chicken tenders, you found your spot.
