Serino’s Italian Foods

Serino's Italian Sub

Serino’s aisles are packed full of Italian goods and wines, and their deli counter has tons of ready to heat (and then eat) meals that were prepared in the back of the store.

I almost walked out with a bunch of stuff to try, but PK reminded me that we already had dinner plans so all I picked up was an Italian Sub. (If you can’t tell, I’ve been on an Italian Sub kick lately.)

This one was really good.  The meat and cheese were on par with Salem, but I was not a fan of the bread.  So, of the three Italian subs I’ve had recently, this ranks #2.

Verdict: Tasty! I’m looking forward to trying some of their prepared food.

Casa d'Italia Italian Sub

Since Salem’s Italian Sub was so tasty, I thought that I should try Casa d’Italiana’s to find out how their Italian sub compares.

Like Salem, Casa d’Italiana is in Waltham.  It’s a lot smaller, but, unlike Salem, they make their own pasta!

On to the sub…While it was good, it was not as good as the sub at Salem. I think that it was due to the meat. I’m not sure if this had to do with quality or that they didn’t use as many spicy meats.

Verdict: Not bad, but nowhere as good as Salem’s Italian Sub.

Salem Italian Food

September 4th, 2008

For some reason, I’ve been craving an Italian sub lately. I don’t know why because the only sub that I like is a Banh Mi. So, during my lunch break at work, I decided to to check out Salem Italian Food on Moody Street in Waltham. This place has a good selection of deli items, pasteries, groceries, and other Italian goods.

I went for their Italian Sub ($4.99). It was a bargain…packed full of different kinds of meat, plenty of cheese, and tasty hot peppers.

Artu for lunch

Artu Roast Lamb

A few days ago, PK and I took the day off and decided to wander around the North End in the afternoon. We sampled many things at several different places. One of the highlights was Artu.

For $8.50, we split the Roast Lamb Panini (which was more like a sub due to the type of bread they use). It was really tasty. The meat was thinly sliced and was topped with marinated eggplant. Even though this is nothing like a Chicago style Italian Beef, there were a few similarities in the taste.

Verdict: I’ve been to Artu for dinner and found it just okay, but for lunch it is a great option.

The other night, PK and I met up with some friends at Rocca. It’s not my type of restaurant, but I promised PK that I would not be a jerk and hate the place based on its decor.

I liked the cocktails since they were not horribly overpriced and had a fair amount of booze. I had a White and Stormy and The Devil’s Garden, which actually had a nice jalapeño kick.

Since we were low on cash, we decided to split the Potato Gnocchi ($13), assuming that the amount of food would be comparable to an appetizer portion for each of us. We were way off. The amount of food was tiny. Someone who ordered the dish just for herself polished off the plate in a matter of minutes and was complaining that she was still hungry. The gnocchi had that freshly made pasta taste, but that is the only compliment that I am going to give it. The meat sauce was pretty flavorless, and the dish was cold (a far cry from luke warm)! We knew that if we sent it back, it wouldn’t really improve the meal, so we didn’t bother.

I didn’t try any of the other dishes at the table, so I cannot comment on the other meals. This write-up is solely based on the gnocchi and the cocktails.

Verdict: Above average cocktails, crappy Gnocchi!

P.S. Once again, I apologize for the horrible photo. I need to stop taking photos with my phone and start carrying my camera around.
